The week between Christmas and New Years, we worked on transforming the downstairs office into a playroom for Tyler (and eventually Caroline). The office is a room that we both fell in love with when we first looked at the house for it's awesome built-ins. Russ had always wanted a library and he got it with this room. But, with kids comes lots of big toys and while we had a small play area upstairs, it wasn't meeting our needs. We added a train table and a play grill to the toy mix over Christmas alone! So, the big executive desk got booted upstairs (which was no small feet, as it had to be taken apart to get up our narrow stairs) and the lower built-in shelves were cleared to make way for baskets of toys. It was also a good excuse for me to break out my label maker to organize the toys into baskets. We still want to paint and convert the area that was the closet back into a closet, but we are so happy with how it turned out. This child has WAY too many toys. And we haven't even begun to add little girl things like a kitchen and dollhouse. Geez!
The nice thing is we can always switch it back to an office when the kids get bigger and want their own play space upstairs. To offset not having a downstairs office for now, I cleaned out the junk drawers in the kitchen to make way for some basic office supplies to keep us from running upstairs every time we need tape, stapler, etc. I also started a new system to attempt to corral mail, bills and all the paper that usually takes over our kitchen. It is definitely still a work in progress, but it seems to work ok so far. We also splurged and got an iPad since the home computer also moved upstairs with the office and the entire family is enjoying it!
